The unrest was somewhat quelled after police quickly released bodycam footage showing the man suspected of murder shooting himself in the head. It was also reported with a megaphone that it was suicide.

By then many shops had already been looted. Several reporters shared images of building demolitions.

Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey has enlisted the help of the National Guard to restore order. Local media report that Frey also imposed a curfew.

Minneapolis was also the scene of riots and looting following the violent death of black detainee George Floyd in that city in late May.
