(CNN) – The Minneapolis police officer who was caught on a video Knee in George Floyd’s neck before the unarmed black man died this week, he was arrested Friday by state authorities, according to John Harrington, commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.
Officer Derek Chauvin was detained by the Minnesota Office of Criminal Apprehension as the fires continued to burn from violent protests overnight as protesters demanded justice for Floyd.
Chauvin was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter, said Mike Freeman, Hennepin County Prosecutor.
The former police officer had 18 previous complaints filed against him with the Internal Affairs of the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD).
It is unclear what the internal affairs complaints were against Agent Derek Chauvin. The police department did not provide additional details.
Chauvin was fired this week, along with three other MPD police officers who were present when Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck. Police reported that they were responding to alleged fraud at a store.
Floyd, a 46-year-old black man who was unarmed and handcuffed, said he couldn’t breathe. Soon after, he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, according to authorities.
Floyd’s death and video of the incident have sparked widespread anger, destructive protests and calls for the officers involved to face criminal charges.
Only two of the 18 complaints against Chauvin were “closed with disciplinary action,” according to a public summary of internal MPD affairs. In both cases, the column “disciplinary measure ordered” indicated that a letter of warning had been issued in response.

Chauvin was not the only officer on the scene that day with a history of complaints against him.
Former agent Tou Thao had six complaints about internal affairs, one of which was still open, according to the public summary released Thursday. The other five complaints had been closed without disciplinary action.
The other two officers involved had no complaints against him, according to MPD’s internal affairs.
CNN has contacted attorneys representing the agents for comment.
