Minneapolis, MN – A Minneapolis police officer was shot and injured during an ambush on the city’s north side on Friday evening. The seven-year veteran, who was following a white Chevy Equinox allegedly tied to a robbery, was shot in the back of the shoulder. The officer was taken to the hospital but walked out early Saturday morning to applause and support from fellow officers.
The incident occurred around 8 p.m. on Friday when the officer began following the suspect vehicle, which was believed to be involved in a robbery in Brooklyn Park the day before. The officer was in an unmarked, “unconventional” vehicle at the time, according to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara.
As the officer reached the 4300 block of Colfax Avenue North, 14 rounds of automatic gunfire erupted, with authorities believing the shots came from the Chevy. The officer was then rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Other officers located the suspect vehicle near Lyndale Avenue North and 42nd Avenue North and initiated a pursuit. The chase ended when the Chevy crashed into a parked, unoccupied car near 21st Avenue and Upton Avenue North. Two men, a woman, and a boy were arrested at the scene, and a gun was recovered. Police have applied for a warrant to search the inside of the vehicle.
The two men and the boy were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
“We are extremely thankful and relieved that this officer is still with us,” said MPD Chief Brian O’Hara. “MPD officers put their lives on the line every day to protect each and every community member, not knowing what each day of that service may bring.”

How did the Minneapolis Police Department show support for the injured officer?
A Minneapolis police officer was shot and injured in an ambush on the city’s north side on Friday evening. The officer, a seven-year veteran, was following a white Chevy Equinox that was believed to be connected to a robbery. He was shot in the back of the shoulder and taken to the hospital. However, to the delight of his fellow officers, he walked out of the hospital early Saturday morning with applause and support.
The incident occurred around 8 p.m. on Friday when the officer began trailing the suspect vehicle, which was suspected to have been involved in a robbery in Brooklyn Park the previous day. At the time, the officer was in an unmarked and unconventional vehicle, according to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara.
When the officer reached the 4300 block of Colfax Avenue North, 14 rounds of automatic gunfire were fired, believed to have come from the Chevy. The officer was quickly transported to the hospital for medical attention.
Meanwhile, other officers found the suspect vehicle near Lyndale Avenue North and 42nd Avenue North and initiated a pursuit. The chase ended when the Chevy collided with a parked, unoccupied car near 21st Avenue and Upton Avenue North. At the scene, two men, a woman, and a boy were apprehended, and a firearm was recovered. Police are seeking a warrant to search the interior of the vehicle.
The two men and the boy were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening.
“We are immensely grateful and relieved that this officer survived the incident,” said MPD Chief Brian O’Hara. “Every day, MPD officers risk their lives to ensure the safety of every community member, never knowing what each day of their service may bring.”
The Minneapolis Police Department, along with local law enforcement agencies and neighboring authorities, gathered at the hospital to demonstrate solidarity and show support for the injured officer.
I hope the officer recovers quickly, and justice is served for this senseless act of violence.
Praying for the officer’s full recovery and grateful for the swift action taken by law enforcement to apprehend those responsible.
