Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Ministry of Commerce cancel the sales ban plan bulk cooking oil starting January 1, 2022. It means, cooking oil the bulk can still circulate next year.
The Director General of Domestic Trade, Oke Nurwan, said that his party canceled the ban and switched sides with a public education approach.
“Now just reverse the pattern, instead of being pushed back, now this is the way the government has returned to educating the public,” he told CNNIndonesia.com, Friday (10/12)
He explained that the main reason for canceling the regulation was due to the current high price of CPO commodities caused by the supercycle.
On the other hand, people’s purchasing power has been eroded by the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s okay to say that if bulk cooking oil is forced to be withdrawn from the market, it is feared that this will have an impact on the economy, which is currently just starting to recover.
“The condition seems to be the fruit of simalakama because of the pandemic, because of the supercycle, and so on. Under normal conditions, the story might be different,” he explained.
He admitted that currently there is no specific strategy to put a brake on the production of bulk cooking oil in the community. With the new approach, citizens are given the freedom to choose. However, through massive education, it is hoped that the public can switch to packaged cooking oil.
“In the era of national economic recovery, we have left it behind. We will try to use another approach, namely education,” he added.
According to him, the Ministry of Trade will soon release a Ministerial Decree (Kepmen) which is currently in the process of harmonization.
Previously, the Ministry of Trade (Kemendag) planned to ban the sale of bulk cooking oil starting January 1, 2022.
This is because the price of bulk cooking oil is highly dependent on the price of raw materials, namely crude palm oil (CPO).
“For this, the government has anticipated by requiring the circulation of packaged cooking oil. Starting January 1, 2022, cooking oil is no longer allowed to be circulated in bulk,” said Oke on Wednesday (11/24).
According to Oke, consuming cooking oil in packaged form is mandatory because it can be stored in the long term so the price is relatively under control.
“If later with packaged cooking oil, the price will be controlled and if there is a change in the price of raw materials that increases it will not have an immediate impact, although in the long term it will definitely have an impact,” he concluded.
