Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy: Creation of a Register of Manufacturers, Maintainers and Repairers of Traditional Wooden Boats

On Friday, February 24, 2024, Ministerial Decision 3153.7/13128/2024/24 was issued by the Minister of Shipping and Insular Policy, Christos Stylianidis. This decision determines the criteria, conditions and necessary supporting documents for registration in the Register of Manufacturers, Maintainers and Repairers of Traditional Wooden Boats.

The announcement of the ministry:

“Following a number of legislative interventions as well as the undiminished effort by the General Secretariat of Shipping and Ports for the support and regeneration of carnages and the protection of traditional wooden boats, the number 3153.7/13128/2024/24 (Government Gazette 1298) was issued B/26-2-2024) Ministerial Decision by the Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, Christos Stylianidesto determine the criteria, conditions and required supporting documents for registration in the register of manufacturers, maintainers and repairers of traditional wooden boats.

The Register is posted on the website of the Ministry of Shipping and Insular Policy, by the Directorate of Shipbuilding Repair Activities of the General Secretariat of Shipping and Ports.

The traditional carnages will be recorded in the Register, as in the context of their operation, legislative gaps and provisions that needed amendments had been identified. Otherwise, the continuation of the activity would be jeopardized and the businesses in question could not become viable, based on the most modern commitments imposed on the establishment and operation of businesses in general.

At the same time, according to iefimerida, with the proposal of the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy, the definition was incorporated, for the first time, in the recent law of the Ministry of Finance on the coast (law 5092/2024 – Gazette 33/A/4-3-2024) (and consequently the economic status) of the carnage and the tarsana.

Traditional wooden boats and karnayas are part of our topography and the existence of our country through the centuries. Consequently, we must protect and highlight them, as a living element of our daily life, not only in our sea but also in every island, in every port”.
