Ministry of Public Health Campaign: Intensifying Vaccination in Border Cities

The Ministry of Public Health began a campaign to intensify vaccination in border cities. This measure is intended to provide protection to the population against diseases that could enter from neighboring countries and that can be prevented with vaccines available in the Expanded Immunization Program (EPI).

In dialogue with La Nación-Nación Media, the director of the PAI, Luis Cousirat explained the scope of the initiative and the areas of coverage. “We have quite good productivity in the campaign. And precisely we are also already expanding the spectrum of work; also intensifying in border cities such as Ciudad del Este, in joint work with other countries (on the Brazilian and Argentine side),” he said.

He said that more than three thousand doses of vaccine have already been applied in the East of the country, which is why he highlighted that “the results are very positive” in the first week of implementation of the plan. “We have very good acceptance from the population. So, that helps a lot to strengthen the work of the brigades,” he said.

For this work, the Ministry of Health has the cooperation of Itaipú Binacional, as well as private universities in Ciudad del Este. Meanwhile, the logistics are provided by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). “This campaign is precisely because in border cities there is always a higher risk of disease outbreaks occurring due to the exchange of people, which occurs even more due to tourist traffic in this region of the country,” he pointed out.

Mr. Cousirat admitted the low immunization coverage in some regions of the country, after the covid-19 pandemic. “We also have the strong economic impact that the pandemic caused in this area of the country where many were left without jobs, which made it impossible for the family to travel to healthcare centers to receive the vaccine. So, yes or yes it was necessary to make a great mobilization for updating and house-to-house vaccination as one of our best strategies there in Alto Paraná,” he said.

Regarding the population to which the campaign is directed, the Public Health official clarified that it includes all the PAI biological products and benefits citizens of all ages. “We have changed the focus on vaccines and we are talking about children from birth to five years of age who must receive the second dose of chickenpox. Then we have the adolescent school vaccination, which is the booster vaccine against tetanus and diphtheria, in a single vaccine,” he explained.

For girls, HPV and then adult vaccination, which is very important, we are talking about influenza vaccines, tetanus vaccines and we also have pneumo 23. Adult vaccination is important because antibodies decrease as the years go by. . So yes or yes, you have to strengthen the body’s immune response so that when you come into contact with the disease, the body recognizes that and can act in defense,” she remarked.
