Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture, and Fisheries Updates Procedures for Sampling Cattle Establishments for Chemical Residues

The Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries updated the procedures that establish the investigation and follow-up sampling of cattle establishments in which chemical residues above the tolerance values established by the General Directorate of Livestock Services are detected in animals sampled. the framework of the National Biological Waste Program (PNRB).

Uruguay has had this program since 1978 and random sampling for the monitoring of veterinary drugs and environmental contaminants, as well as follow-up sampling in cases where random monitoring yielded results above the maximum limits. In this way, maximum guarantees are provided to consumers.

“In recent years there has been a trend towards an increase in the detection of chemical residues above tolerance values. In part, it is possible that it is explained by an increase in monitoring pressure for some groups of compounds (such as ectoparasiticides) and a greater detection capacity of the Veterinary Laboratory Directorate (Dilave “Miguel C. Rubino”), through the acquisition high-sensitivity equipment and implementation of analytical methodologies that can detect very low concentrations”, explained Dr. Diego Moreira Borrelli, MGAP expert, in the framework of his talk “National Biological Waste Program: monitoring residues of veterinary medicines and chemical residues in the bovine meat chain”, in the Uruguayan Conference on Buiatrics.

Now, through a Resolution, the General Directorate of Livestock Services (MGAP) established: those establishments (company names) with their respective registration number in Dicose that appear in the Ownership and Transit Guide in items “A” (No. of the owner of the cattle) and item “C” (Dicose number of the physical place of departure of the cattle).

It was established that the veterinary inspection acting in authorized slaughter establishments will only carry out follow-up sampling when the animals come from the same physical place of departure that was entered in the “List of Observed Properties”.

The Dicose owner of the cattle will only be sampled when he sends animals from the same physical place of departure with which he was originally entered into the “List of Observed Properties”. In this way it will help to avoid misuse of zootherapy.

What products are sampled?

Samples of meat and dairy products are analyzed in slaughter plants and industrializing establishments and livestock farms, supervised by officials from the Animal Industry and Animal Health Division of the MGAP. In turn, honey is also analyzed in extraction rooms and products from aquaculture.
