The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has decided to promote a plan to prioritize assigning seats close to the aircraft emergency doors to firefighters, police officers, and soldiers in order to prevent the recurrence of the ‘Asiana flight accident’ in which a passenger opened the emergency door of an airplane in flight.
Baek Won-guk, 2nd Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, announced this at the ‘Party-Government Council on Measures to Strengthen Aircraft Emergency Door Safety’ held at the National Assembly on the morning of the 13th.
Vice Minister Baek said, “The government has prepared measures to strengthen the safety of aircraft emergency doors, with the main goal being to give priority to seats adjacent to emergency doors to firefighters, police officers, and soldiers so that people can travel safely by air.”
“Immediately after the incident, the emergency doors of 335 passenger planes of national airlines were thoroughly investigated, and as an emergency measure, the airlines voluntarily stopped selling 23 problem seats on 23 aircraft of the same model as the incident, but the public’s anxiety and concern about the emergency doors of the aircraft It continues,” he said.
“This incident is believed to have been caused by the structural characteristics of the emergency door, which made it difficult for the flight attendant to monitor the passenger as the aircraft emergency door operating lever was in close contact with the passenger in the emergency exit seat,” he explained.
In addition to strengthening the rules for seat occupants near emergency doors, the measures prepared by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport are known to include strengthening aircraft safety management by subdividing the ‘aviation security level’ and countermeasures according to the degree of threat.
On May 26, an emergency door opening accident occurred on an Asiana flight from Jeju to Daegu just before landing, and on the 19th of last month, a passenger on Jeju Air from Cebu to Incheon in the Philippines was stopped while trying to open the emergency exit. While doing so, my interest in aviation security grew.
