The Ministry of Health and Population said that genetic diseases are being examined in nurseries as part of the President of the Republic’s initiative for early detection of genetic diseases in newborn children.
For her part, Dr. Hala Al-Arabi, coordinator of the Early Detection of Genetic Diseases Initiative, said that 42 centers have been allocated to treat genetic diseases in newborns, in cooperation with the Supreme Council of University Hospitals of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and those centers are being successively expanded to include all Governorates of the Republic, explaining that these centers provide treatment and periodic follow-up services “free” to children who suffer from any hereditary diseases, to help them live their lives normally, in addition to providing support and counseling services to parents, to reduce the possibility of having children with any of the hereditary diseases.
Dr. Hala El-Arabi noted that the 42 centers are distributed across the governorates of the Republic, and include (Al-Mahkama Medical Center, Rawd Al-Farag Medical Center, Ain Helwan Medical Center, Old Misr Medical Center, Genetics Clinic at Demerdash Children’s Hospital, Ketogenic Nutrition Clinic in Demerdash, Digestive System Clinic. At Al-Demerdash Children’s Hospital, the Digestive System and Liver Clinic at Abu Al-Rish Japanese Hospital, the Ketogenic Nutrition Clinic at Abu Al-Rish Hospital (Cairo Governorate), and (the Genetic Counseling Clinic at the Ophthalmology Children’s Hospital, a center at Al-Talaba Hospital, the Clinical Center for Genetics at Smouha Hospital, the Ketogenic Diet Clinic at Smouha Hospital, the Metabolic Diseases Clinic.
