The Indonesian Ministry of Health revealed the results of the epidemiological team’s investigation regarding eight patients in DKI Jakarta who some time ago were said to have contracted the virus from rats, but the cause was unknown. The Director General of Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) Maxi Rein Rondonuwu confirmed that the eight DKI patients living in the Cipete area, South Jakarta, were not infected with the rat virus.
“The patient has recovered. The symptoms point to chikungunya or dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF),” said Maxi when contacted detik.com Tuesday (7/6/2022).
The suspicion of being exposed to the virus from rats stems from a report by the Head of RT 08 Cipete Selatan Sub-district, Cilandak, South Jakarta who reported that his residents had a high fever until red spots appeared. The Ministry of Health, called Maxi, has conducted laboratory tests on rat samples in the area.
The test results did show that the mice were infected with leptospirosis. However, Maxi believes that none of the eight people suspected of being exposed to the mysterious rat virus have leptospirosis.
This is because the symptoms of leptospirosis are considered more severe, and can even be fatal if not treated immediately.
“Because if leptospirosis symptoms are more severe due to bacterial causes, such as high fever, muscle pain, jaundice, if not treated, it can lead to inflammation of the brain, meningitis, kidney disorders, and even death,” he said.
