Ministry of Health Reports 3 Cases of Children with Polio-Related Paralysis

JawaPos.com – The Ministry of Health reported three positive cases of children with acute paralysis due to polio. This should be an alarm to intensify prevention of the spread of the polio virus in various ways, one of which is polio immunization.

Directorate General of Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, Maxi Rein Rondonuwu, said that the polio virus can be transmitted through water contaminated with feces containing the polio virus.

“Some of the risk factors for the transmission of cirrus polio are low polio immunization coverage, environmental hygiene conditions and poor hygiene behavior such as open defecation either in rivers or in water sources that are also used in daily life,” he told reporters, Sunday (14/1).

If the Polio virus enters the body of a child who has not received polio immunization or whose polio immunization is incomplete, the virus will very easily reproduce in the digestive tract and attack the child’s nervous system, causing paralysis.

To overcome and stop the transmission of the polio virus, we urge the public to play an active role. The first is to ensure that their children receive complete routine polio immunization according to age, namely 4 polio drops and 2 polio injections, before the age of 1 year.

Second, ensure that all children aged 0 to 7 years in all areas of Central Java and East Java provinces as well as Sleman Regency, DIY Province receive 2 additional doses of polio immunization drops during the Sub National Immunization Week (Sub PIN) activities which will be held starting January 15 2024. Third , implementing clean and healthy living habits, including defecating in a latrine with a septic tank and washing hands with soap before eating and after defecating.

Fourth, the public is advised to immediately report to the nearest health worker or community health center if they find a child under 15 years of age with symptoms of sudden paralysis.

Previously, the Ministry of Health reported the discovery of three cases of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) caused by Polio Virus Type Two. The three cases were discovered in 2023 and 2024.

The Directorate General of Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, Maxi Rein Rondonuwu, detailed that two cases were found in the provinces of Central Java and East Java last December, while another case was found in East Java on January 4 2024.

“In December 2023, two cases of acute paralysis caused by the polio virus were discovered with different case chronologies,” he told reporters, Friday (12/1).
