Ministry of Health Reminds Parents to Immediately Complete Child Vaccinations

Vaccinations for children must be complete, especially those missed due to the pandemic.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — In commemoration of World Immunization Week 2022, the Ministry of Health reminded parents to immediately complete their child’s vaccinations, especially those that were missed or left behind due to the pandemic. This is so that the children’s immune system increases.

The Acting Director of Immunization Management, Ministry of Health, Dr. Prima Yosephine, said that apart from the pandemic, the toughest challenge for the immunization program in Indonesia today is to prevent negative news about immunizations that discourage parents from immunizing their children. “Immunization is very important for our children. So if your child has not received complete immunization, then immediately come to a health service that provides immunization services and complete the vaccination,” said Prima in the 2022 World Immunization Week webinar, Thursday (14/4/ 2022).

Immunization is useful for preventing disease transmission, epidemics, serious illness, disability to the death of infants and toddlers. Complete and advanced basic immunization will affect the future of Indonesian children. Currently, there are various useful immunizations available to prevent more than 20 life-threatening diseases. Immunization currently prevents two million to three million deaths each year from diseases such as diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, influenza, and measles.

In 2020 to 2030, it is estimated that immunization will save more than 32 million lives. Of which 28 million are children under the age of five. Prima said parents are expected to take advantage of the National Child Immunization Month (BIAN) in May to catch up with complete basic immunizations.

The types of complete basic immunization for infants aged 0-11 months are 1 dose of HB0, 1 dose of BCG, 3 doses of DPT-HB-Hib, 4 doses of polio drops (OPV), 1 dose of injectable polio (IPV) and 1 dose of measles rubella.

Follow-up immunizations for children aged 18-24 months are 1 dose of DPT-HB-Hib and 1 dose of rubella measles. Meanwhile, secondary immunization for primary school children is measles, rubella and DT in grade 1 children and Td in grade 2 and 5 children.

“This chase immunization able to which we give OPV, IPV, polio injections, polio drops, then penta (DPT-HB-Hib), we give to children under five years old who have not received it yet or have not received it at all but are already over one year old, “explained Prim.

Specifically for rubella measles, the Ministry of Health will provide immunizations to children under the age of 12 who are outside the islands of Java and Bali. There are five provinces that are of particular concern for rubella measles immunization, namely Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau and Riau Islands.

“For rubella measles, it is special, because rubella measles does not take into account past immunization status, so starting at the age of 9 months until before his 12th birthday. Specifically for five provinces, the limit is up to 15 years. But for Java-Bali the target is only toddlers to rubella measles,” said Prima.
