In 2023, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) applied 688,489 doses against the human papillomavirus (HPV) to girls and boys in the fifth grade of primary school and from 9 to 13 years of age throughout the country, the sector’s portfolio reported. .
He added that, in this way, it was possible to protect 87% of the target population and thereby contribute to reducing the incidence of cervical cancer, among other types of cancer.
The regions of Madre de Dios, Lima provinces, La Libertad, Ica, Arequipa and Áncash managed to protect 100% of their target population. Meanwhile, Moquegua, Ucayali, Pasco, Amazonas, Callao, Loreto, Piura and Tacna have more vaccination gaps to cover.
According to the National Vaccination Plan against HPV for 2024, this year’s goal is to protect more than 802,000 boys and girls in the fifth grade of primary school and from 11 to 13 years old, who have not been vaccinated.
Currently, the Executive Directorate of Immunizations of the Minsa is carrying out the necessary procedures to extend the age of vaccination.
As announced by Minister César Vásquez Sánchez, all the documentation required for the extension of the vaccination age is being prepared, it being necessary to have study reports from the National Institute of Health (INS), as well as the opinion of the Committee of Minsa Experts.
With all this, the technical standard for vaccination against HPV will be modified, according to the closing of gaps that must be prioritized. Meanwhile, coverage gaps against HPV will continue to be closed for boys and girls in the fifth grade of primary school and between 11 and 13 years old, who have not been vaccinated.
Given
Law No. 31953, Public Sector Budget Law for Fiscal Year 2024, provided more than S/ 11.3 million to finance the closing of gaps in HPV vaccination interventions at the national level, an amount of which more than S/ 8 million were allocated to regional governments.
