Ministry of Health: Immunization to break the chain of the spread of polio in Aceh

Banda Aceh (ANTARA) – The Indonesian Ministry of Health said the implementation of National Immunization Week (PIN) sub in Aceh following the Extraordinary Incident (KLB) of polio cases in Pidie district, was an effort to accelerate the breaking of the polio virus chain in Tanah Rencong.

Acting Director of Immunization Management at the Ministry of Health Prima Yosephine in Banda Aceh said on Friday Outbreak response immunization (ORI) starts in Pidie next week, while for all Aceh it starts on 5 December.

“We need to create a secondary PIN. It is called sub because it is specific to Aceh, and this serves to immediately break the chain of transmission (polio). We hope to be successful” Prima said.

He explained that full basic immunization coverage in Aceh has been quite low in recent years. This condition puts Aceh’s children at high risk of contracting diseases that should be prevented by immunisation.

Of course, he continued, this was proved by the discovery of cases of polio or wilt paralysis affecting children in Mane, Pidie district.

In fact, the poliomyelitis virus has also infected healthy, asymptomatic children, but without a complete history of basic immunization. Therefore the implementation of sub PIN in Aceh is very important.

“We hope this sub PIN will immediately decide the spread of the polio virus, which is currently in Pidie. This virus is circulating, we have found that even healthy children are affected by the polio virus,” he said.

Data from the Indonesian Ministry of Health, antigen vaccination coverage in Aceh up to October 2022 is generally quite low. Coverage for BCG is about 48.90%, HB0 is 67.1%, polio is 46.8%, IPV is 18.8%, DPT-HB-Hib 3 is only 39.3% , CR is 43.7%.

Furthermore, IDL coverage was 39.8%, DPT-HB-Hib 4 was only 17.3%, and CR2 was only 21.9%. The coverage of each antigen has yet to reach the target.

“So (Sub PIN) is up to all of us, the coverage for success is at least 95%, so he needs support in other areas, so it’s impossible for the agency, only the Puskesmas to be active. The goal is to about 100,000 children in Pidie,” he said.

Previously, the Aceh Health Service had registered four cases of polio in Aceh that were detected in the Mane area of Pidie district. In one area, the four children are yet to undergo treatment at theZAZAEL Abidin Regional General Hospital in Banda Aceh.

The four children who were infected with the polio virus did not have a complete background immunization history, so they were at a very high risk of contracting the virus.
