Ministry of Health Expands Heart Disease Services in Regions

This service will focus on nine catastrophic diseases.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) develops a network of superior services in the regions. This service will focus on nine catastrophic disease or diseases with a high number of cases and deaths, namely heart disease, cancer, stroke, tuberculosis, kidney, diabetes, infection, liver, maternal and child health.

“We also want to encourage hospitals including referral hospital so that the nine fatal diseases can be accessed by all people, including in the regions,” said Secretary General of the Ministry of Health, Kunta Wibawa Dasa Nugraha, during a virtual discussion on Covid-19 Handling and Health Transformation in Jakarta, Thursday.

Indonesia is registered with tuberculosis case second highest in the world. Deaths in Indonesia due to cardiovascular disease reach 651,481 people per year, consisting of, among others, stroke 331,349 deaths, coronary heart disease 245,343 deaths, and hypertension heart disease 50,620 deaths.

Kunta said that doctors in the regions must be trained at least to provide care related to nine catastrophic diseases so that patients with these diseases can be treated immediately and do not have to be immediately taken to a big city like Jakarta to receive treatment. For example, if Indonesia has a network of services related to heart disease that reaches the regions, then people suffering from heart disease do not need to flock to Jakarta to get treatment, because the regions can handle both in terms of health workers, equipment and drugs.

In addition to developing a superior service network, the Ministry of Health also focuses on increasing access to hospital services by building a primary hospital in disadvantaged areas, borders and outer islands. It is targeted that there is an improvement in the availability of essential medicines in hospitals for the treatment of the nine national priority diseases.

The Ministry of Health not only improves access but also improves the quality of health services in the country so that Indonesians do not need to go abroad for treatment, because adequate and quality care is available in the country. The number of health workers including doctors in the regions will be increased to meet the human resource needs in the health sector, including through the provision of scholarships to access medical education.

Partnerships or collaborations with international hospitals and laboratories, global institutions, universities and the world’s best health care centers and the implementation of the //academic health// system is carried out, so that the quality or quality of health services in the country increases.
