Ministry of Health Denies Hospital Collapse Affected by surge in Covid patients

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Director of Direct Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Ministry of Health Siti Nadia Tarmizi denied that the condition of the referral hospital for the patient was exposed to the corona virus (covid-19In a number of areas, Indonesia has collapsed due to not being able to deal with the surge in Covid-19 patients, which continues to grow every day.

This was conveyed by Nadia while responding to the report of the Coalition of LaporCovid19 Citizens which noted that 265 people died from Covid-19 while undergoing independent isolation at home, while looking for health facilities, and while waiting in line for the Emergency Installation (IGD) at the hospital.

“If the health facility collapses, no, no,” said Nadia via text message to Mr CNNIndonesia.com, Monday (5/7).

Nadia said, so far the Ministry of Health has instructed all regional governments, including governors, mayors and regents, to increase the number of beds in each referral hospital for Covid-19 patients in their respective areas.

The Ministry of Health has asked all Covid-19 hospitals in Indonesia to increase the capacity of the treatment rooms for patients exposed to the corona virus, by changing the function or converting beds in order to strengthen the anticipation of the surge in Covid-19 cases in the country.

“This means that we need the firmness of the regional head to ask all private health service facilities to help in conditions like this,” he said.

Nadia also detailed that if the hospital is in the red zone or the BOR bed occupancy rate (BOR) is above 80 percent, then the hospital must convert a minimum of 40 percent of inpatient beds for COVID-19 patients, and convert a minimum of 25 percent of the ICU from inpatient room.

Furthermore, for the yellow zone, aka BOR above 60-80 percent, Nadia asked the hospital to convert a minimum of 30 percent of inpatient beds for Covid-19 patients, as well as convert a minimum of 15 percent of the ICU from inpatient rooms.

Meanwhile, for the green zone or BOR below 60 percent, the hospital must convert a minimum of 20 percent of inpatient beds for Covid-19 patients, as well as convert a minimum of 10 percent of the ICU from inpatient rooms.

“The addition of a centralized isolation place in Hajj Dormitory in all provinces has also been coordinated with the Ministry of Religion,” he said.

Furthermore, Nadia also warned that people who are allowed to self-isolate are those who are not short of breath, have oxygen saturation above 95 percent, and do not have dangerous comorbidities or comorbidities.

Meanwhile, if they experience bad conditions, Nadia urges people to go to health facilities. Because most of the residents who come to the hospital are already in a worsening condition with COVID-19 symptoms, so they have a high potential to die.

“We recommend COVID-19 patients with mild and asymptomatic symptoms to self-isolate at home, but those with moderate symptoms to immediately go to a health facility so that it is not too late for treatment,” he concluded.
