The extension of human papillomavirus vaccination coverage for men was approved by the Ministry of National Health. This was achieved after a year of insistence from the Colombian Association of Scientific Societies of Hematology and Gynecology, which aims to eradicate cervical cancer.
With a letter promoted by members of the association, the request was filed before the portfolio for the extension of vaccination against HPV in adolescent men between 9 and 17 years of age. This petition was voted in favor in the middle of a meeting of the National Committee on Immunization Practices.
A milestone for the eradication of cervical cancer
Natalia Castrillón Valencia, Master in Public Health and member of the association, explained the scope of the petition. “All human beings are infected, therefore, if women are receiving protection, but men are not, because they will continue to transmit the virus to their sexual partners. The milestone is that this is a step that accelerates the path towards the eradication of cervical cancer”.

“The more vaccination coverage, the more possibilities of stopping the disease”
Ivonne Díaz, a member of the ASCS board of directors, also spoke. “Virulence has definitely been found to decrease when the vaccine is given. At this moment in Colombia we have the possibility of vaccinating four and nine genotypes, the more coverage we have, the more possibilities there are of stopping the disease process”.
