Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Health and Population, indicated that the ministry has included this system within the critical and urgent care system, while raising the efficiency of laboratories attached to hospitals, and providing the latest treatment protocols in all poison centers at the governorate level.
Abdel Ghaffar said that the emergency departments were restructured and equipped with the necessary medicines and supplies to deal with poisoning cases in public and central hospitals, in which poisoning treatment units were included, namely (Zayed Al Nahyan – Umm Al-Masryeen – Al-Ameriya General – Mansoura General – Nasser General – Minya General – Port Said General – Qena General – Menouf General – Hurghada General – General Eman – Sohag General – Ismailia General – Al-Minshawi General – Fayoum General – Itay Al-Baroud – Kafr Al-Dawar Al-Aam – Matrouh Al-Aam – Beni Suef General – Kafr El-Sheikh General – Zagazig General – Damietta General).
Abdel Ghaffar noted the training of medical personnel working in the emergency and intensive care departments (doctors, pharmacists, laboratory technicians, and nurses) on how to deal with poisoning cases, and work is underway to nominate more medical personnel for training in dealing with these cases.
Abdul Ghaffar added that the ministry has provided anti-poisoning agents, as well as serums and treatment protocols, and has provided the newly developed centers with a spectral detection device for analyzing drugs and narcotic substances, and has provided the necessary chemical solutions in all emergency laboratories in the announced hospitals, to conduct the necessary examinations for cases of poisoning.
Abdel Ghaffar stressed the importance of coordination with the concerned authorities represented in the central administration for critical and urgent care, the preventive medicine sector, occupational health and environmental monitoring, in addition to coordination with the occupational and environmental medicine departments in Egyptian universities and the preparation of awareness messages for groups exposed to the dangers of chronic poisoning of the need for periodic examination and participation in medical survey programs, noting the activation of a cooperation protocol with the General Secretariat for Mental Health and Addiction Treatment for joint training in the field of poison control and addiction treatment.
For his part, Dr. Khaled Al-Khatib, Head of the Central Administration for Critical and Urgent Care, explained that the death rate resulting from poisoning cases decreased during the last period to less than 1% as a result of increasing awareness and providing instructions on poisoning cases and how to deal with the patient until reaching the hospital.
Al-Khatib drew attention to the provision of telephone consultations via the emergency hotline of the Ministry of Health and Population at No. 137, in coordination with the hotlines of poison centers affiliated to university hospitals, to provide the best and finest medical service to the Egyptian citizen.
