The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it summoned the Hungarian ambassador to Bucharest on Monday, after Viktor Orban’s controversial speech delivered on Saturday at Băile Tușnad. The MAE expressed its “surprise at the presentation in the public speech of the Hungarian Prime Minister of the aspects communicated verbally, through diplomatic channels, constantly privileged by the Romanian side”.

“The MFA states that the Hungarian ambassador to Bucharest was summoned today, July 24, 2023, to the MFA headquarters, in the context of the speech delivered on Saturday, July 22, 2023, by the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, during the Summer Camp at Băile Tușnad.

The Romanian side reiterated the fact that, in the framework of the constant diplomatic dialogue with the Hungarian side, it has repeatedly called for restraint in the statements and public messages of Hungarian officials on private visits to Romania, including in the perspective of this year’s Tușnad Summer Camp. In this context, he expressed surprise at the presentation in the public speech of the Hungarian Prime Minister of the aspects communicated verbally, through diplomatic channels, constantly privileged by the Romanian side.

At the same time, the Romanian MFA stated that the inappropriate public statements sent on this occasion are not in line with the objective of promoting a pragmatic, constructive, good-neighborly and collaborative relationship between the two states, an objective supported by the Romanian side,” says the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Hungary has a substantial interest in cooperating with Romania on the basis of mutual respect, as this is “beneficial for both countries and both nations”, said Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto on Monday, quoted by the MTI agency, after the Hungarian ambassador in Bucharest was summoned to the Romanian MFA following Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s statements at the Summer University of Băile Tuşnad.
