Ministry of environment will present the climate law at the end of the month

The Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development will present in the last week of July a bill that will raise to legal status the goals on reducing emissions of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) and adaptation to climate change in Colombia, announced in December 2020 before the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and that are compiled in the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC for its acronym in English).

This law will include as a mandate the execution of a set of minimum actions and articulation schemes that will allow the country to continue advancing towards its medium and long-term goals, These include reducing GHG emissions by 51% by 2030, reaching carbon neutrality by 2050 and reducing black carbon emissions by 40% compared to 2014, among others.

“We want to work decisively and send a strong message to the international community about Colombia’s commitment to the effective management of climate change, which will facilitate the leverage of resources and will keep us at the forefront of climate change, since there are already several countries that have raised their goals to the level of law “said Carlos Eduardo Correa, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development.

This project, led by the Ministry of the Environment, will integrate all sectors so that they work in a decisive, coordinated and continuous manner in favor of the country’s climate objectives, to which the National Government committed itself when signing the Paris Agreement. Similarly, it seeks to create a scenario of legal security and predictability not only for public institutions, but also for companies and citizens in general.
