[이코노믹리뷰=최동훈 기자] The government has doubled the amount of subsidies paid to consumers who scrapped old diesel vehicles early.

On the 4th, two ministries, including the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, announced on the 4th that they will expand and reorganize the support project for early scrapping of old diesel vehicles with grade 5 emissions this year.

The target volume of old diesel vehicles to be scrapped early this year is 340,000 units, up 13.3% from 300,000 units last year. For older vehicles that are difficult to take, such as installing additional smoke reduction devices, or used for livelihoods, the maximum subsidy per unit has been raised from 3 million won to 6 million won. An additional subsidy can be provided when a car owner who has scrapped an early car purchases a used car with emission levels 1 to 2 powered by any power source except diesel.

For example, if a small business driver who was operating an old diesel vehicle destroys the vehicle early, 70% of the subsidy (up to 4.2 million won) is received. After that, if you purchase a used vehicle that is an electric vehicle or gasoline vehicle with an emission level of 1 to 2, you can receive a subsidy (up to 1.8 million won) of 30% of the vehicle value.

The government decided to provide subsidies for used cars as well, considering that many of the consumers operating old diesel cars tended to purchase used cars after early scrapping.

Vehicles that have been subjected to emission reduction measures or are not used for livelihood or business purposes, or drivers who are not small business owners can receive up to 3 million won in subsidies, such as 2.1 million won for early scrapping and up to 900,000 won for vehicle purchases.

Subsidies can be applied through local governments or Korea Automobile Environment Association through mail, fax, or website.

Kim Seung-hee, Minister of Environment’s Air Quality Policy, said, “We will do our best to reduce fine dust emitted from automobiles as well as support the vulnerable by promoting the improved early car demolition subsidy system without a hitch.”
