Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Arifin Tasrif confirmed the desire to replace and update pertalite Becoming Pertamax Green 92 may not be possible next year.
Pertamax green 92 is fuel made with a mixture of ethanol. He said that currently, the renewal was still under PT Pertamina (Persero)’s internal study.
On the other hand, Arifin said that the ethanol raw material needed to produce Pertamax Green is also not widely available in Indonesia.
“Not yet (pertalite will disappear next year). Later,” said Arifin at the Office of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Jakarta, Friday (1/9).
Arifin said that currently sugar cane plantations for raw ethanol already exist in East Java. However, that’s not enough. Therefore, its development must be pursued with the help of technology from Brazil.
“So, if that can be done, then that’s the plan, yes, we’ll see the potential for development in Papua. Because previously it was said that the sugar cane seeds came from Papua, moved to Portugal, then to Brazil. Now it’s back to their habitat,” said Arifin.
Pertamina is currently studying to increase the octane level of subsidized fuel RON 90 aka pertalite to RON 92.
This was done by mixing pertalite with 7 percent ethanol so that it became Pertamax green 92. This study is part of the Phase 2 Blue Sky Program which is still being discussed internally.
“The program is the result of Pertamina’s internal review, there has been no decision from the government. Of course we will propose this and we will discuss it further,” said Pertamina’s Main Director Nicke Widyawati while attending a hearing with Commission VII DPR RI in Jakarta, Wednesday ( 30/8) ago.
Nicke added that if the proposal can be discussed and become a government program, the price of fuel that is more environmentally friendly will be regulated by the government.
“It is impossible for the price for the Special Assignment Fuel Type (JBKP) to be handed over to the market because there is a subsidy and compensation mechanism in it,” explained Nicke.
The study, continued Nicke, was carried out to produce better fuel quality. This is because the higher the octane level, the more environmentally friendly the fuel is.
“For example, at the same price, people get better, with a better octane number, so the engine is also better, so emissions can also decrease. But this is just a suggestion, so it’s not up for debate,” Nicke explained.
Furthermore, Nicke emphasized that the Phase 2 Blue Sky Program is an internal study at Pertamina which will be proposed to the government. Regarding the certainty of the implementation of the program is the authority of the government.
