Ministry of Education Announces Strategic Partnership with UNICEF for Climate Education Action Plan

Abu Dhabi, October 12 / WAM / The Ministry of Education announced a strategic partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), with the aim of launching an action plan for climate education that provides children and youth with environmentally sensitive skills to help them adapt to the effects of climate change and prepare to confront them.
This comes within the framework of the Ministry’s efforts to achieve the goals of the Green Education Partnership Roadmap in preparation for the country’s hosting of the Climate Conference (COP28). The partnership revolves around “building green capabilities,” which is one of the four axes included in the roadmap that the Ministry launched last April, in addition to green education. , green schools, green communities.
Through this partnership, the two sides will cooperate to launch and implement three programs: training educational staff, champions of climate neutrality, and an arts competition for children. These programs aim to achieve a systematic and comprehensive impact that gives students and teachers the ability to manage climate change to build a better environmental future.
Her Excellency Dr. Amna Al Dahak Al Shamsi, Assistant Undersecretary for the Care and Capacity Building Sector at the Ministry of Education, said on this occasion that the Ministry’s vision aimed at achieving sustainable development goals in line with national policies in the country and the UAE Centennial 2071 goals, which was embodied in the launch of the education road map. Green, with its axes that seek to include the climate agenda and concepts of sustainability within the educational system in the country.
She stressed the importance of the pivotal role of education in leading positive change and confronting the effects of climate change by shaping environmental culture, providing children and youth with climate education, and instilling skills that take into account the environment and sustainable practices.
His Excellency Dr. Amna Al Dahak Al Shamsi said: “We are pleased with this partnership with a global institution the size of UNICEF, and we are confident that our joint cooperation will provide the necessary professional development for teachers to be able to instill awareness among their students about ways to confront climate change, and will enhance the environmental awareness and sustainability skills of students so that they can be positive contributors.” “In leading sustainability efforts in the country in the future, the Ministry, in turn, will continue to establish strategic partnerships with various local and international strategic partners to organize programs and initiatives aimed at promoting and spreading climate awareness among various groups of youth, adolescents and children before, during and after the COP28 summit.”
For his part, Al-Tayeb Adam, UNICEF Representative in the Gulf Region, said: “We are pleased to sign the partnership agreement with the Ministry of Education in the UAE. This agreement is evidence of our shared belief in the importance of educational staff and children at the heart of climate action. Addressing climate change and reducing its impacts are two Two things are necessary to protect children around the world, and here comes the pivotal role of education, represented by school curricula, teacher training, and school activities, in achieving positive change towards greater environmental sustainability. Through the programs, the Ministry of Education seeks to provide every learner with the knowledge, skills, values ​​and attitudes necessary to address climate change and promote sustainable development, which will be achieved through the professional development of every teacher, educator and school principal in the UAE in partnership with UNICEF.
At the same time, the two parties will work to provide children with the opportunity to express their opinions during the period leading up to the COP28 Conference of the Parties, through the “Educational Staff Training – Climate Education Pioneers” program, the Climate Neutral Champions program, and the children’s arts competition.
The Ministry of Education and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) will announce all the details of these initiatives, their most prominent outcomes and the results they have achieved before the start of the climate conference activities.
It is worth noting that the Green Education Partnership Roadmap in the UAE, with its four axes, has set clear environmental and climate goals that the Ministry seeks to achieve before the launch of the COP28 summit, including a commitment to make half of the schools and universities in the country green with the launch of the summit, and to train and qualify more than 2,800 teachers. And 1,400 educational officials, with the COP28 summit witnessing the organization of the first educational pavilion in the history of climate summits.
