Art and culture should be accessible to everyone – that’s why, since July, students have been able to visit interesting and significant learning places free of charge as part of the pilot project with the so-called Hessen culture bus. Schools in rural areas in particular benefit from the offer, as they can make visits as a class group. So far, trips have been made possible for almost 13,000 children and young people from more than 180 schools with around 1,300 accompanying persons. Minister of Education Prof. Dr. R. Alexander Lorz said: “With the culture bus we have chosen a new approach: we bring our students, especially from rural areas, easily to more distant cultural educational sites such as museums and theaters in the cities.”
The budget made available by the state of Hesse enabled all interested schools – regardless of school type and local district – to book a bus for day visits to cultural locations or cultural events. The offer proved to be particularly popular among primary schools. Thanks to the funding of 300,000 euros, more than 200 trips will be realized by the end of November. The plan is to continue the project next year after an evaluation. “The culture bus contributes something to educational equality, as it offers all students new perspectives in the cultural sector this time, regardless of their financial possibilities,” said Education Minister Lorz in conclusion.
The aim of the Kulturbus Hessen is to give students low-barrier and equal access to art and culture and to ensure participation. Schools in rural locations and with difficult access to public transport in particular benefit from this offer. But schools in metropolitan areas can also easily reach more distant cultural destinations with the help of the Hesse Culture Bus.
