Ministers in President Joko Widodo’s Cabinet Run for Legislative Members in 2024 Election

Several ministers and deputy ministers in the President’s cabinet Joko Widodo forward as a candidate member of the legislature (caleg) DPR RI in 2024 election.

Candidate registration will continue until Sunday (14/5). The following are the names of ministers and deputy ministers who have decided to run for election so far:

Zulkifli Hasan

Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan alias Zulhas will run for election in the Electoral District (Dapil) of Central Java I. The electoral district includes Semarang Regency, Kendal Regency, Salatiga City and Semarang City.

In the 2019 Simultaneous Elections, the General Chairperson of PAN ran for the Lampung I Dapil. These areas include South Lampung, Bandar Lampung, Metro, Pesawaran, Pringsewu, Tanggamus, West Coast, and West Lampung.

Deputy Chairman of PAN, Viva Yoga Mauladi, explained that Zulhas moved the electoral district to win PAN in Central Java. The decision was taken after evaluating the results of the previous elections.

“To strengthen the Central Java electoral district because in the 2019 elections, PAN lost eight seats in the DPR RI,” said Viva.

Ida Fauziyah

The Minister of Manpower Ida Fauziyah will run for election through the National Awakening Party (PKB). He will fight in the Jakarta II electoral district which includes South Jakarta, Central Jakarta and abroad.

Abdul Halim Iskandar

Another PKB cadre who is also Minister of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions and Transmigration Abdul Halim Iskandar will also become a candidate for legislative in 2024.

PKB prepared Abdul to fight in East Java. However, PKB is still considering which electoral district is suitable for the older brother of PKB chairman Muhaimin Iskandar.

Benny Rhamdani

Head of the National Agency for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (BP2MI) Benny Rhamdani will participate in the 2024 Simultaneous Elections.

Benny will advance through the Hanura Party. He was prepared to run for election in the West Java II Electoral District which includes Bandung Regency and West Bandung Regency.

Angela Tanoesoedibjo

Deputy Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Angela Tanoesoedibjo will run for legislature through the Perindo Party. He will fight in the East Java Electoral District I which includes Surabaya and Sidoarjo.

Secretary General of Perindo Ahmad Rofiq said Perindo had prepared Angela’s candidacy carefully. According to him, the East Java Dapil I was chosen because it is Angela’s hometown.

Afriansyah Ferry Noor

Deputy Minister of the Minister of Manpower Afriansyah Ferry Noor will graze in the West Java Dapil V. He will become a candidate for the Crescent Star Party (PBB).

The UN Secretary General has moved his constituency from the previous election. In 2019, Ferry nyaleg in the South Sumatra I electoral district which includes Palembang, Musi Rawas, Musi Banyuasin, Lubuk Linggau, and Banyuasin.

PDIP ministers

PDIP Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto said he would prepare candidates from ministerial circles. However, he has not disclosed which ministers will run for legislature through the PDI-P.

PDIP has several representatives in Jokowi’s cabinet. They are Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna H. Laoly, Minister of Social Affairs Tri Rismaharini, Minister of PUPR Basuki Hadimuljono, Minister of PPPA Gusti Ayu Bintang Darmawati, and Minister of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform RB Azwar Anas.

“The names representing academics, from cultural figures, which ministers in Pak Jokowi’s cabinet will be nominated by the PDIP, experts who will become the core of each commission, will be announced at the right time,” said Hasto at the Bung Karno Gelora complex, Jakarta , Monday (8/5).

Ministers who run for legislative members do not need to resign from office. This is regulated in Article 240 paragraph (1) of Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning General Elections.

The article only requires that several public officials resign when they are about to run for election. These positions are the head and deputy regional head, ASN, members of the TNI-Polri, directors, commissioners, as well as supervisory boards and employees in BUMN/BUMD.
