Ministers have demanded immediate action against the Metropolitan Police following an incident where an officer suggested that being “openly Jewish” could provoke pro-Palestinian protesters. The officer’s comment, caught on film, has sparked outrage among campaigners and political figures alike, raising concerns about the force’s approach to policing protests.

Public Calls for Resignation

Former home secretary Suella Braverman and the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) have been advocating for either the resignation or dismissal of Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley. They assert that the incident showcases either remarkable incompetence or a concerning culture that permits the intimidation of certain groups, leaving the rest of the community to silence and submission.

Government Condemns Incident

The government has joined in the criticism of the incident, although they have underscored the responsibility of the London mayor, Sadiq Khan, in holding Commissioner Rowley accountable. Energy secretary Claire Coutinho has stressed the necessity of taking action against such divisive behavior, emphasizing that no community should be hindered from going about their daily lives without fear of provocation or harassment.

Powers Held by the London Mayor

The mayor of London has the jurisdiction to effectively dismiss the commissioner. However, this can only occur with the home secretary’s permission, who also reserves the authority to compel the mayor to terminate the commissioner’s position.

Response and Apologies

Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley, has reiterated the force’s apology and reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all individuals in London. He acknowledged the vulnerability felt by Jewish and Muslim Londoners and acknowledged the need to rectify actions that have heightened concerns within these communities.

Following the incident, the Metropolitan Police offered and later withdrew an apology relating to the pro-Palestinian marches. The Campaign Against Antisemitism exposed footage showing a police officer referring to their chief executive, Gideon Falter, as “openly Jewish” during a protest. Another officer threatened to arrest Falter, citing his presence as a “breach of peace” and “antagonising”.

Repercussions of Inaction

Anti-Semitic individuals and extremist groups have closely observed the Metropolitan Police’s excuses and inaction, interpreting it as a signal of leniency in the face of criminal behavior. The force under Commissioner Mark Rowley’s leadership has deeply let down the Jewish community, and the lack of decisive action serves as a clear signal of their waning determination to combat such criminality.

Demands from the Home Secretary

Home secretary James Cleverly has corresponded with the Metropolitan Police and London mayor regarding the incident. The Home Office has welcomed the police force’s apology, acknowledging the difficulties of managing swiftly evolving public protests. However, they emphasize that no act of faith or identity, including being Jewish, should be seen as provocative. Everyone deserves to go about their lives in safety and security.

A Pledge to Regain Trust

A spokesperson for the London mayor has reiterated the necessity for Londoners to feel safe and be bestowed the freedom to move without fear or restriction. The original response to the incident by the Metropolitan Police was decried as insensitive and concerning. The incident highlights the challenging position the police force faces when making operational decisions during protests. Nevertheless, regaining the community’s confidence remains their utmost priority.
