Minister Wiersma threatens Haga Lyceum with measures

Minister Wiersma for Primary and Secondary Education is very critical of the Cornelius Haga Lyceum in Amsterdam. He threatens with measures against the Islamic school.

In a new report, the Education Inspectorate describes the quality of education at Haga Lyceum as “very poor”. The school has a maximum of one year to improve this. And if that doesn’t happen, “funding sanctions” will follow. SIO (the foundation under which the Haga Lyceum falls) has tried to prevent the publication of the report, but the judge has rejected it.

The Haga Lyceum has come under fire before, among other things because of conflicts about the quality of education and because the school did not sufficiently teach the students the values of democracy and the rule of law. Several lawsuits have been filed against the school.

Worry and irritation

Wiersma writes to the House of Representatives that he has taken note of the findings of the inspectorate “with great concern and irritation”. “The fact that the Cornelius Haga Lyceum is not able to offer better education is first of all terrible news for the students; this is at the expense of their development.”

The minister added that his patience is running out and that he cannot let a “years of worrying situation” pass.

‘Too much focus on legal proceedings’

Wiersma makes an urgent appeal to the foundation to work on the tasks of the inspectorate. “Unfortunately, until now a lot of attention from the board has been devoted to legal proceedings, while all the time and energy must go to students.”

The minister writes that he expects more reports from the inspectorate about the school and that he is considering “other steps”.
