Minister Warns of Tough Economic Challenges Ahead for Indonesia in 2024

Jakarta

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto described Indonesia’s economic growth as climbing a mountain. Even though economic growth is predicted to be stable, he sees global uncertainty making Indonesia’s economic challenges even more severe in the future.

“We can make an analogy in the future that economic growth is climbing a mountain because the challenges are getting tougher. And inflation is rain, rain because if we climb a mountain and the weather is rainy then the already slippery road will become even harder,” said Airlangga in the 2024 Indonesian Economic Outlook agenda at the Hotel St. Regis, Central Jakarta, Friday (22/12/2023).

Therefore, Airlangga explained that Indonesia needs to unite steps to face future challenges. Luckily, said Airlangga, Indonesia’s economic fundamentals are still maintained today. The government projects stable economic growth at 5% until 2024. He also said that a similar statement was also made by the World Bank in its recent report.

“Our (economic growth) is above the average growth of developed and developing countries. The inflation rate is also relatively under control and Indonesia is one of the countries that has succeeded in returning inflation to its target,” he said.

Apart from that, Airlangga stated that Indonesia’s debt ratio is currently still below 40%, namely 38%. He assessed that these various achievements were inseparable from the government’s successful efforts to synergize fiscal, monetary and real sector policies.

“This is support from the entire community and fiscal policy is a shock absorber that is responsive to economic policy,” he said.

Responding to this, President Joko Widodo agreed that the Indonesian economy is believed to be stable until 2024. However, the President said that all parties must be careful and vigilant. He even quoted a Javanese proverb to describe the current global uncertainty.

“Javanese say stay alert and alert. You must remember to be careful and alert. Global uncertainty continues,” said Jokowi.
