The Minister proudly expressed the 100% Argentine development of basic research carried out by CONICET and UNSAM, in collaboration with national laboratories and with the support of the National State in production, science and technology. This set of efforts has made it possible to advance in the phase of three clinical trials for the development of a national vaccine against COVID-19.
In relation to this issue, he stressed that the analysis of phase three for those under sixty years of age is being finalized and that it will soon be submitted to ANMAT for registration. In addition, the clinical trial with those over 65 years of age is being completed, which will allow the indications of this vaccine to be expanded in the future.
In addition, he affirmed that, although there are minor changes in the virus, there is no concern about the emergence of new variants that represent a greater risk. Vaccines, regardless of the exact virus strain, continue to prove effective in preventing mortality and hospitalizations. However, he stressed the importance of vaccination, especially after six months, when the body’s natural protection begins to diminish.
Vizzotti emphasized that “prevention remains a key tool in the fight against disease and climate change.”
“It is crucial to continue promoting vaccination and the adoption of preventive measures to protect the health of the population and reduce the negative impacts of climatic phenomena,” said the minister.
In this sense, he called on the population to get closer to receiving booster vaccines, especially those over fifty years of age and those with risk conditions. The availability of vaccines is high, and the Minister stressed the importance of stabilizing protection against possible increases in the circulation of the virus, even in hot weather.
Vizzotti stressed that receiving the booster of the COVID-19 vaccine is essential to keep defenses high and reduce the chances of hospitalization or death, especially in people with risk conditions. In the same way, he referred to the relevance of the flu and pneumococcal vaccine for those adults who have medical conditions that make them more vulnerable.
On the other hand, one of the main achievements that was highlighted during the meeting was the progress in the integration of the health system. The Minister underlined the efforts made in this area, pointing out the numerous novelties in relation to the Information System and the Integrated Health History. In addition, he highlighted the start of the cystic fibrosis plan and the centralized acquisition of high-priced medicines, as well as the work of the Superintendency of Health Services to recover the costs of care for patients with social coverage in the public sector, thus strengthening this important pillar of national health.
Regional Health Council was held in Misiones
Likewise, Minister Vizzotti placed special emphasis on two specific issues for the NEA region. First of all, she highlighted the joint work with the province of Misiones in the mitigation of climate change and its impact on health. In this sense, the actions coordinated with the Climate Change Secretariat and the provinces were highlighted to guarantee that health is an integral part of these mitigation measures.
The second relevant issue mentioned by the Minister was progress towards the elimination of leprosy in the region. Although significant progress has been made in this area, with the collaboration of Paraguay and Brazil, she was strong on the need to maintain a sustained effort and work with neighboring countries to achieve the complete eradication of the disease.
The presence of representatives from all sectors of the NEA provinces was highlighted by the Minister, who considered that this will facilitate joint work and progress on the different issues addressed.
Vaccination
Carla Vizzotti, emphasized the importance of vaccination as one of the main disease prevention strategies. During the CORESA meeting in Misiones, she highlighted the importance of receiving additional vaccinations and getting vaccinated against the flu, as well as improving vaccination coverage at all stages of life. She recognized that in the NEA region, primary care plays a fundamental role in bringing health closer to the population, and emphasized the importance of maintaining a clear focus on promoting these preventive practices.
Climate change
In another order, Minister Vizzotti reaffirmed the National Government’s concern about climate change and its impacts on health. She called for concrete actions on a day-to-day basis to minimize the consequences of this phenomenon, “highlighting that climate change is no longer a future threat, but a present reality.” The Minister acknowledged that, although Argentina is not one of the main emitters of greenhouse gases, it is a direct recipient of the negative impacts of climate change.
In this sense, he highlighted the work of the Climate Change Secretariat and its work to raise awareness at the international level about the need for the countries responsible for the largest emissions to collaborate by financing the mitigation of the effects in the receiving countries, such as Argentina.
The joint work between the Ministry of Health and the Secretariat for Climate Change focuses on minimizing the consequences of climate change on the health of the population. This includes addressing vector-borne diseases, preparing for heat waves and floods, and implementing measures to mitigate the effects of climate change on public health.
Likewise, he highlighted the importance that the voices of recipient countries, such as Argentina, be heard at the international level so that those who generate the impact finance the mitigation of its effects in the most vulnerable nations.
The health area joins efforts to mitigate the consequences of this phenomenon. Among the measures implemented, the Minister highlighted the creation of a risk management unit that monitors weather events and the alteration of vectors responsible for diseases transmitted through them. Collaboration between the different levels of government, including the nation, province, and municipalities, together with the participation of other ministries such as Defense and the Environment, has been essential to comprehensively address these problems.
