The cabinet of Minister of the Interior Annelies Verlinden (CD&V) is studying a national ban on fireworks during the end-of-year period. The decision will be made next week.

The reason for this is the decision of the governors involved to introduce such a ban in the provinces of Antwerp and West Flanders and the fact that other governors are still waiting for a possible federal decision. The Dutch government already decided last week that our northern neighbors are not allowed to set off fireworks on New Year’s Eve.
In Antwerp, ‘local authorities will not give permission to set off fireworks and they will not organize fireworks themselves to avoid physical social contact’, Antwerp governor Cathy Berx said earlier. The West Flemish governor Decaluwé imposed a similar ban on fireworks on Christmas and New Year. The governors wants to relieve the burden on hospitals and avoid gatherings.
According to the spokeswoman for Minister Verlinden, a national ban is now being considered. A decision may be made earlier next week.
