When she was about seven years old, the pastor came into the classroom and asked who wanted to become an altar boy. Karien van Gennip raised her arm in the air. The pastor looked around the class, noted ‘Mark, Frank, André’ and closed his notebook again. ,,And I was just waving in the back of the class,’ says Van Gennip. “The teacher explained that only boys can become altar boys.”
