Minister Urges Prime Minister and Union Education Minister to Keep ‘India’ in Textbooks: Importance of National Identity and Educational Continuity

Thiruvananthapuram: Public Education Minister V. Shivankutty has sent a letter to the Prime Minister and Union Education Minister asking them not to remove ‘India’ from textbooks. The letter was sent via e-mail. The minister’s letter points out that changing this would cause confusion and disrupt educational continuity. The country’s identity is a unique blend of history, culture and diversity, and the name ‘India’ is an important part of that identity, the letter said.

The term ‘Bharat’ coexists with ‘India’ within the national identity. The Constitution of India itself recognizes this. Article One refers to the country as ‘India’ and ‘Bharat’. Students learned about the rich past of history and heritage with the name ‘India’ for generations. Changing it now will create confusion and disrupt the continuity of education, the minister said in the letter.

For generations, students have learned the rich past of history and heritage with the name ‘India’. Changing it now would cause confusion and disrupt educational continuity. It has been alleged that NCERT’s stance is only to support certain ideologies. This raises concerns about distortion of history and bias in education, the letter said.

It is essential to scrutinize such recommendations to ensure that they do not follow any particular political or ideological agenda. Steps should be taken to intervene and cancel the NCERT panel’s proposal to replace ‘India’ with ‘Bharat’ in textbooks. In the letter, the minister pointed out that maintaining the status quo in this matter is in the best interest of the education system and the unity of the diverse country.
