The development of ‘smart cities’ revolves around the question of how technology and data can help to solve social issues in the areas of mobility, education, care, sustainability and safety. An example is the approach in an Eindhoven nightlife area where sensors and cameras collect information. In case of unrest, bright lights will automatically switch on. And where Utrecht is working on a model district (‘Smart Grid’) for smart and efficient use of electricity, Rotterdam is working on a system that uses sensors to optimize water management.
Minister Ollongren is one of the keynote speakers at the international conference. “The Netherlands is internationally known for being particularly innovative. We are a densely populated country and we need to work on smart solutions. The small scale means that innovations can get off the ground quickly. This offers many opportunities for the Dutch business community,” said the minister.
The innovation mission is organized by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) in collaboration with the Dutch consulate, Trade&Innovate NL, Amsterdam Trade&Innovate, Rotterdam partners and Brainport Eindhoven. Henk de Jong, general manager of consultancy firm PBQL, is the business leader of the mission. The 50 participating parties from the Netherlands present their innovations from the Holland Pavilion in the stock exchange building.
