The Minister of Women, Glory Montenegro, reported that during the period of state of emergency, established by the advance of the coronavirus (COVID-19), a total of 400 cases of rape of girls have been registered.
In relation to these crimes, the minister explained that most of these were perpetrated within the minors’ home and those responsible were close relatives.
“The data we have is really worrying. The pandemic has shown us all the damage that the macho culture does to Peru. There are more than 400 cases of rape of girls, this shows that violence occurs within families, it is not that the girl goes out into the street, rapes occur within the home ”, he asserted in RPP.
“CWhen we see the registry of aggressors, we appreciate that there are parents, stepfathers, brothers, cousins, uncles, all members of the family group“He added.
Montenegro also noted that in the month of May there was a significant increase in the number of reports of both rape and physical violence against women and minors.
“There are more than 7,000 cases of detainees for violence against women, and attempts at feminicide exceed 200. The most unfortunate thing is that we have reached thirty feminicides. March and April were quiet months, but May was terrible because the numbers shot up, the calls reached 40,000, of which 15,000 corresponded to attacks on children“, Indicated.
In this regard, Montengro asked the Congress of the Republic to convene a plenary session specialized in issues of violence against women, so that rules can be issued to help reduce this type of crime.
