Minister of Vanuatu Praises UAE’s Efforts in Climate Change and COP28 Preparation

Abu Dhabi, October 29 / WAM / Ralph Regenvanu, Minister of Climate Change, Energy and Environment of Vanuatu, praised the efforts of the United Arab Emirates and its cooperation in confronting the challenges of climate change and noted its approach and preparations to host the COP28 conference.
In statements to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, in Abu Dhabi on the sidelines of the preliminary meetings of the COP28 Conference of the Parties, Regenvano appreciated the role of the UAE in supporting his country’s efforts in the field of renewable energy, pointing to the existing cooperation between the two countries in solar energy projects. He stressed the importance of the issue of the Loss and Damage Fund and stressed that it It will be a qualitative leap in the process of the Conferences of the Parties, and he expressed his hope to see this fund operating in countries such as Vanuatu.
Regenvanu said: “Vanuatu is a small island in the Pacific Ocean and we are one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change. We are trying very quickly to make ourselves more flexible and able to adapt. The United Arab Emirates is working with us in this way and we have a large number of joint projects.”
He explained that his country’s parliament and the Ministry of Climate Change operate with solar energy provided by a project from the UAE. He stressed the importance of these preliminary meetings in resolving some issues before the date of COP28 in order to achieve the desired success. He pointed out that his country was exposed to a Category 4 tropical cyclone during the past days, and this is The third tropical cyclone of this category this year, pointing out that his country faces major problems in terms of losses and damages resulting from these hurricanes, in addition to issues of adaptation.
The Minister of Climate Change, Energy and Environment of Vanuatu said, “We look forward to seeing more financing for adaptation to climate change and the completion of the Loss and Damage Fund. In Vanuatu, we have a goal of reaching 100% of electricity from renewable energy by 2030, and we are on the way.” “The right thing to do is to achieve this with the help of countries like the United Arab Emirates, and these are some of the measures that we came here to talk about to try to see if we can get funding for this purpose.”
He explained that Vanuatu is one of the poorest developing countries, and therefore the costs of dealing with climate change are much more than it can bear in its budget, as the national budget must deal with basic health and education services. He said: “So we need the funding that was pledged as part of the Paris Agreement.”
He added that the current conference comes after the completion of the global assessment, and therefore we are aware and aware of the extent of our decline and we know the corrective measures that must be taken, pointing out that the United Arab Emirates is making its efforts in confronting climate change.

The Minister of Climate Change, Energy and Environment of the State of Vanuatu said at the conclusion of his statements: “We very much hope that this is the place where we see the result of the global assessment, and the necessary directions that must be taken to continue moving forward.. We always want the COPs to take action and we trust “This conference will be different.”
