On Wednesday, January 10, the Minister of the Interior, Agne Bilotaitė, announced at a press conference that the recent abduction of a girl in Kaunas does not indicate a deterioration in security in the country, stating that child abductions are extremely rare in Lithuania, writes Delphi, Lithuania.
Meanwhile, the head of the Kaunas District Prosecutor’s Office Rims Bradūns will announcethat the 42-year-old man, who was arrested on Tuesday and is suspected, will be charged with child abduction, and Kaunas district prosecutors have requested a three-month detention.
The Minister of the Interior confirmed that there are no trends or circumstances that would indicate changes in the security situation in Lithuania.
She emphasized that in 99% of cases, missing children are found safe and sound within a few days, adding that in most cases children are found with friends, relatives or shopping centers.
As reported by the portal Delfi.ltPolice Commissioner General Renāts Požėla also confirmed that the overall security situation in the country has remained unchanged.
He referred to the preliminary crime data of last year, which do not show any drastic changes compared to 2022 and 2021, emphasizing that Lithuania is most likely one of the safest in the region and maybe even in the EU.
BNN already reported that on Tuesday, January 9, in the evening in Kaunas, the police found the missing nine-year-old girl Agota safe and sound near the place of abduction. The girl went missing on Sunday, January 7, and hundreds of police officers and volunteers were involved in the search.
The law enforcement authorities have recognized the information about the car that was spotted near the bus stop on Sunday as crucial in the investigation of the kidnapping case.
It has been established that the detained person lived in the garage and had a weapons permit, and the authorities are planning to evaluate the man’s mental health.
