Earlier this week, a riot arose in the Flemish parliament when Demir – as minister and therefore part of the majority – himself directed the establishment of a parliamentary inquiry committee – a control mechanism of the parliament that is usually deployed by the opposition – to the PFOS pollution in Zwijndrecht.
The pollution from the chemical factory 3M in Zwijndrecht came to light as a result of the excavations carried out in the context of the Oosterweel connection. High concentrations of the chemical PFOS were found in the soil around the wharf, which can cause all kinds of health problems, such as cancer.
The criticism is that the problem known for years but that it took too long for action to be taken by the competent authorities.
