Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The 79th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia ceremony was held for the first time in the National Capital (IKN) of the archipelago, East Kalimantan. President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) led the ceremony which started at 11.00 WITA.
In a hybrid way, the ceremony was also held at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, and led by Vice President Ma’ruf Amin.
One thing that caught the attention of the Indonesian people at the 17 August 2024 ceremony was the reading of prayers led by the Minister of Religion (Menag) Yaqut Cholil Qoumas at IKN.
In reading the prayer, Yaqut asked leaders to understand true independence. He pointed out that Indonesia had been colonized by foreigners for hundreds of years, and then colonized by their own lust and jealousy.
He also called on heads of state to have wisdom and prudence. He asked the people of Indonesia to open their hearts to uphold honesty and justice.
“Open our hearts to prioritize common interests over personal interests, make our country understand the true meaning of independence,” Yaqut said in his prayer.
