Minister of Public Health Warns of Increased Covid-19 Viral Circulation, No Resurgence

El País Editorial
The Minister of Public Health, Karina Rando, warned that in recent weeks there has been an increase in viral circulation of covid-19 in the country, although she ruled out the possibility that it is a resurgence.

“In these weeks there was a little more viral circulation, but we are still in a viral circulation that is lower compared to the same period last year; that is, we cannot say that there is a resurgence of covid because that is not the case. No “There is a resurgence, what we have is a viral circulation that is a little higher than the previous epidemiological weeks,” he said this Thursday in Presidential Communication.

Regarding the ages of contagion, the minister pointed out that this is not possible to know at this stage. “You cannot know which (people) are most infected because we are not doing universal testing,” she said. This means that not all patients with a respiratory condition are tested, as was practiced during the health emergency.

“That stage has already passed, today we are in an endemic stage, the country suffers from this disease as a chronic disease, as can be another circulation of other viruses,” Rando explained.

Based on the data from the centers that do continue to test and monitor the disease, the minister stated that “the highest percentage of severe acute respiratory infections occurs in patients over 65 years of age” and that today “approximately between two people die.” and five patients per week of covid-19, of which the vast majority of them are patients who have significant concurrent diseases or who are older than 70 or 65 years, but today we have not recorded mortality in healthy young patients.”

The Ministry continues with the booster vaccination campaign, which is doing “very well” in Rando’s opinion to the extent that 16,500 doses have already been administered.

Rando reiterated that the recommendation of this dose is aimed at all those over 70 years of age, as well as those over 50 with comorbidities or those under 50 years of age with a medical indication for a disease that causes immunosuppression. While the majority of the rest of the population does not require this booster because they already have immunity and, if infected, they will acquire the disease with a “lower intensity.”
