Minister of Public Health María Teresa Barán Calls for Teamwork and Strengthening of Health Resources

The Minister of Public Health, María Teresa Barán, upon taking office, this Thursday asked the staff of the health portfolio to put on the shirt and warned that “there is no margin for error”, following the message of President Santiago Peña. The Itapuense doctor praised the work of her colleagues during the pandemic and announced that the training of human resources will be strengthened to work to improve the country’s image.

“In me you will find a co-worker where we will do teamwork, where I will need the support of each one of you. We need us to put on our shirts because the President of the Republic has said: ‘We have no margin for error’”, said Dr. Barán at the inauguration ceremony.

He affirmed that universal access to health services and work in health promotion and prevention will be prioritized. “We always say: prevention is better than cure, and we from the Promotion Department and from all directions are going to continue working on prevention. From the Expanded Immunization Program (PAI) we are also going to work on what prevention is, “said Barán.

Minister Teresa Barán announced the members of her working team: Miguel Olmedo as deputy minister of Integrated Health Care; Dr. A.S. José Ortellado as deputy minister of Rectory and Surveillance; Dra. Águeda Cabello for Health Surveillance; Dr. A.S. Raúl Doria at the National Cancer Institute (Incan); Dr. A.S. Juan Fernandez Valdovinos at the Trauma Hospital; Dr. A.S. Marcos Melgarejo at St. George’s Hospital.

Also, were confirmed: Drs. Héctor Castro at the Pediatric Hospital “Children of Acosta Ñu”; Dr. A.S. Felipe González will continue to head the National Institute of Respiratory and Environmental Diseases “Juan Max Boettner” (Ineram); Lic. Hugo Luis Cousirat Sanabria in the Expanded Immunization Program – PAI; Dr. A.S. Pablo Zapattini for the Directorate of Health Supplies.

Another no less challenge is the point referring to the training of human resources. “The outgoing minister has said that we have to seek a health career and the only way to have this health career is professionalization and that our colleagues really have that training to be able to work,” he said.

The Secretary of State emphasized that the administrative staff will also be trained, considering it “extremely important in the organization of services.” “I recognize and greatly admire the work that all the administrative staff do,” she pointed out.

He assured that the work will be intense to guarantee quality health to the population, for which reason nursing staff, doctors and administrative staff will also be encouraged. “We have to continue working on our country image, what is it that we as Paraguayans want as public health. We have to have the helm and the stewardship. We are going to work intensely so that we can achieve all our objectives, ”he concluded.
