Minister of National Defense: the development of the armed forces needs the support of the academy

Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky emphasized that the development of weapons requires the support of the highest scientific circles on Thursday in Budapest, at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

On Thursday, the minister and Tamás Freund, president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, signed an agreement on cooperation between the Ministry of Defense and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

After the signing, Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky emphasized: in an age of danger, it is necessary to develop the armed forces and strengthen the resilience of society, but in the case of the developing and changing army, this cannot be to do but with support. of the highest academic circles.

He noted:

the most credible public institution is the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and it can look back on a legal history that is even older than the Hungarian Defense Forces.

He reminded her: the relationship and collaboration with the Hungarian Academy of Sciences has long-term roots, dating back to the 1880s, when the military science society was founded. He said that since then, many soldiers were members of the scientific academy, but their names are now forgotten, and recently there are fewer in uniform in the highest scientific circles, but said he would be happy if this changed.

He said: the currently signed cooperation agreement is not a formal reconnection of the one signed in 2007, but a deep reconsideration based on content. As he said, there are issues in all sectors of the MTA where collaboration will have a direct and indirect impact, and he cited education, training, the defense industry, AI, cyber security as examples.

He noted:

they are building a strong, confident, well-armed, high-tech force, and this requires the support of science.

Tamás Freund, president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, spoke that the role of science and technology is very important in our time in the functioning of society, the economy and the state. He said: this applies to all government policies, but especially to national defense and security policy.

He drew attention to the fact that the evaluation of unbiased and unbiased scientific information is essential in political decision-making. As he said, the academy’s self-selected mission and statutory public duty is to provide scientific advice to the government and parliament.
