Minister of Justice Han Dong-hoon gives opening speech at ICC Asia-Pacific Regional Seminar, addresses impeachment pressure from Democratic Party

While the Democratic Party of Korea is pressuring a number of government officials of the Yoon Seok-yeol government to ‘impeach’, Justice Minister Han Dong-hoon mentioned the “request for unconstitutional party adjudication” against the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party’s behavior was said to be an ‘act of destruction of democracy.’

Minister Han left the Gwacheon Ministry of Justice building on the 14th and said, “The Democratic Party impeached a judge, impeached the Minister of Public Administration and Security, said they would impeach the Chairman of the Korea Communications Commission, said they would impeach three prosecutors, and said they would impeach me, but then backed off. “I said I would impeach the Prosecutor General today, but I changed my words because the atmosphere was not good,” he said. “It seems like the Democratic Party is now pushing for the impeachment of one person a day.”

He then said, “As a last resort to prevent the destruction of the democracy inherent in the Constitution of the Republic of Korea, there is an impeachment prosecution on the National Assembly side and a request for unconstitutionality trial on the government side. “What would you think if the Ministry of Justice filed a lawsuit against the Democratic Party for unconstitutionality on the grounds that it destroyed liberal democracy?” he asked reporters. He then asked, “Do you think the unconstitutionality ruling against the Democratic Party is more likely to be upheld by the Constitutional Court than the impeachment of President Lee Won-seok or the impeachment of me?” He then said, “I don’t think so.” He also said, “The Democratic Party believes that there is no possibility that the kind of impeachment they are pursuing will be cited, but they are overusing impeachment with the political calculation that it will be a profitable business since it will be dismissed after the general election.”

However, Minister Han immediately drew the line, saying, “The Ministry of Justice currently has no plans to file a request for unconstitutionality.” Still, it left room. “If it is a path that has even the slightest chance of ruining the country and causing harm to the people by paralyzing and confusing state functions, it is right not to even look at it unless there is really no other way,” he said. “The Democratic Party is not like that at all right now,” he added.

Earlier this morning, the Democratic Party brought up the idea of impeaching the Prosecutor General. Kim Yong-min, leader of the Democratic Party’s prosecutorial crime response task force (member of the National Assembly), said at the party’s in-house countermeasures meeting, “President Lee Won-seok is no different. “He continues to make biased remarks and easily carries the constitution,” he said. “It’s like watching Hanahoe during the military dictatorship. “We will expand the targets and scope of impeachment testing,” he said.
