Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita encouraged the domestic vehicle industry, especially trucks, to adapt their products to meet mining industry specifications. Agus asked industry players to at least create an assembly line in Indonesia.
“We encourage the domestic industry to immediately prepare truck products that comply with mining specifications, we ask them to at least build an assembly line here first,” he said when met at the JS Luwansa Hotel, Jakarta, Monday (2/ 12/2024).
According to Agus, the need for trucks in the mining sector is quite large. He said the coal and mineral commodity sectors were growing, so there needed to be support from the vehicle industry.
“Because the needs that have been conveyed are very large. Coal is growing, other commodities in minerals are also growing. I agree that it must be, so that our industry is ready,” he stressed.
The context of Agus’s conversation was responding to the issue of flooding of trucks from China in nickel mines in Maluku and Sulawesi. According to CNN Indonesia, Japanese brand trucks may dominate Indonesian roads, but when it comes to nickel mines in Morowali (Southeast Sulawesi) and Halmahera (North Maluku), the most popular red trucks from China, the Shacman brand.
Motor Sights International (MSI), Shacman’s distributor, explained that it had sold more than 6,000 trucks in Indonesia since 2016, of which 95 percent of sales were used in Morowali and Halmahera.
“The largest nickel ore producer in the world has two main production projects, namely in Morowali and Weda Bay (Halmahera). They contribute 95 percent of the total daily operational vehicles for Motor Sights’ main heavy-duty truck product, with a population of more than 4,000 units,” said General Manager of PT MSI, Mohamad Rosyid Setiadi, on the opening day of the Energy & Engineering Series 2023 (IEE Series 2023) which was held in Jakarta, Wednesday (13/9/2023).
