Minister of Health Urges Education on Wolbachia Technology to Prevent Dengue Fever in Kupang City

hopes that later the implementation of Wolbachia technology can be expanded to 21 other districts in NTT

Kupang (ANTARA) – Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Budi Gunadi Sadikin asked the Kupang City Health Service, East Nusa Tenggara Province to actively provide education regarding the benefits of Wolbachia technology to the public in preventing and reducing Dengue Fever (DHF).

“We ask the Kupang City Health Service to actively provide education to the public regarding Wolbachia technology,” said Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin when attending the launch of Wolbachia Technology Implementation at the Oebobo Subdistrict Office, Kupang City, Tuesday.

The Minister of Health asked the Health Service and the Head of the Community Health Center to coordinate with academics to conduct research to find out impact data after and before the implementation of Wolbachia technology so that our policies can be much better in the future.

Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin said that preventing and reducing Dengue Fever (DHF) must start from the Puskesmas and Posyandu levels.

“Dengue fever is a virus carried by mosquitoes and this Wolbachia technology has been researched at Gajah Mada University in Yogyakarta by Indonesian researchers. Data on Dengue Fever in Yogyakarta with Wolbachia technology has decreased drastically. The Wolbachia technology was good, so we piloted it project “in five cities and Kupang City is one of them,” said the Minister of Health.

He hopes that the dengue fever virus in Kupang City can decrease so that people will become healthier.

Meanwhile, Acting Governor of NTT Ayodhia GL Kalake expressed his appreciation and thanks to the Ministry of Health for choosing Kupang City as one of the five cities for the Wolbachia Implementation Pilot Project.

Ayodhia said that cases of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) are still a serious health problem in NTT.

According to him, all districts/cities in NTT are categorized as endemic for dengue disease, with dengue outbreaks occurring almost every year and an increase in cases and deaths in several areas.

He said that dengue cases occurring in NTT in 2022 would reach 3,376 cases with 29 deaths.

Several regencies/cities with the highest cases are West Manggarai, Sikka, Southwest Sumba, Kupang City and West Sumba, while death cases are spread across 13 regencies/cities including Kupang City with 1 death.

“The NTT Provincial Government hopes that the selection of Kupang City to implement Wolbachia technology can increase the NTT community’s understanding of this technology. “Apart from that, we also hope that later the implementation of Wolbachia technology can be expanded to 21 other districts in NTT so that it can significantly reduce dengue cases in NTT,” he said.

He added that in the next few months we will enter the rainy season which tends to increase the number of dengue fever cases, so we need to be vigilant and keep the environment clean by eradicating mosquito nests with the 4M steps of Draining, Covering, Burying and Monitoring plus using mosquito repellent, mosquito nets and planting plants. mosquito repellent and immediately go to a health facility if there are symptoms of dengue fever.

According to him, the implementation of Wolbachia technology can be successful in reducing the number of dengue fever cases if there is collaborative work from stakeholders and active participation from the community in order to make NTT developed and prosperous through efforts to improve the level of public health.
