Minister of Health Responds to WHO Revoking COVID-19 Global Health Emergency Status

Jakarta

Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin (Menkes) responded to the statement by the World Health Organization (WHO) which revoked the global health emergency status of COVID-19. The Minister of Health said that prior to the announcement, his party had consulted with the WHO team to prepare for the transition from a pandemic to endemic in Indonesia.

“WHO, in its last meeting, said that the emergency status or in our terms the pandemic has been withdrawn. In fact, we have consulted them twice, we said that Indonesia is in this condition, we have also prepared the medicine, the vaccinations, then the public education and we also report to WHO that Indonesia is ready,” he explained when met at the Office of the Ministry of Health, Sunday (7/5/2023).

Regarding the increase in cases caused by the Arcturus variant, the Minister of Health said the condition was still being monitored under control. The dominance of this variant is also almost 90 percent, indicating that the peak will soon be passed.

“Our current test is Arcturus, but the figure is still 2,000 per day. The peak occurs when the dominance of the variant is 95 percent. Now the Arcturus is 85-90 percent,” he explained.

Regarding the revocation of the pandemic status, the Minister of Health said that he would immediately consult with President Joko Widodo.

“Later, the President has to do it because there is a Presidential Decree. I think you should consult with him first because he is still focused on the Asean Summit. Just pray,” he concluded.
