The Minister of Health, Alexandru Rafila, declared, on Wednesday evening, on Digi24, that what happened in Botoșani, where a 25-year-old young woman, who was pregnant, died in maternity, “is incomprehensible and unacceptable”. He “appealed to all doctors to work in the interest of the patient”.

The minister explained that the hospital in Botoșani was not accredited and that it was to receive a classification level.

Rafila says ‘what happened is unacceptable’

Rafila also said that she is in a position where she cannot have strong opinions related to the correct application or non-application of the medical act, but that she cannot help but find that what happened is unacceptable.

The Minister of Health catalogs as “correct” the decision of the Botoşani county authorities to change the manager of the “Mavromati” County Emergency Hospital from his position.

“It is a correct decision, from my point of view, because, even if the manager was not a doctor, there is responsibility for providing medical assistance and I can tell you that there are many hospitals in Romania that are run by medical managers or people with all other professions and they are well managed, the medical assistance is uninterrupted and is given to a good standard of quality”, said Alexandru Rafila.

He said that, in his opinion, it is “incomprehensible” that the doctors from Botoşani did not intervene in the case of the young woman who had just lost her pregnancy.

“In the end, it doesn’t matter who the hospital is under, the important thing is to have direct involvement and knowledge of the hospital’s medical problems. If you are not a specialist, you can work very well with the medical director, but there, in Botoşani, I think there were several problems, I know that there were, not too long ago, protests by the medical staff related to the granting of some increases, I think that a month or two ago. Later, I also saw a position of a doctor who held or holds a position of head of department, who mentions that it is normal for doctors to sleep during the guards. Doctors can rest, and it is normal for them to rest during their shifts, when they do not have medical emergencies. The presence of a pregnant woman, with a pregnancy stopped from developing, and this was noticed since admission, and the non-intervention or at least the visit of that woman in the interval of seven hours, seems incomprehensible to me”, stated the minister.

Also, when asked if what happened at the Maternity Hospital in Botoşani can be repeated in other hospitals, the minister replied: “I would be dishonest with you to tell you that it cannot happen”, stressing that the professional conscience of each of the doctors is important , but also the administrative measures that “can reduce these phenomena”.

The 25-year-old woman who died on Friday morning in the Botoşani Maternity Hospital did not receive medical care for almost seven hours, according to a preliminary report drawn up by the Botoşani Public Health Directorate (DSP), quoted by Agerpres.

According to the cited source, patient Alexandra Ivanov was hospitalized at 11:30 p.m. with “external genital bleeding, hypogastric and lumbar pains.”

The diagnosis established at admission was “suspended pregnancy, minor metrorrhagia, observation of secondary anemia”. The health inspectors established that “from 00:45, when she was administered physiological serum and a medicine, until 07:35, no care maneuver was performed” for the young woman in question.
