Minister of Health Budi Review New Innovations to Prevent DHF, Conduct Trials for Spreading Mosquitoes with Wolbachia Bacteria

JAKARTA, celebrities.id – Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin reviewing new innovations in the prevention and spread of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DBD). The innovation is Wolbachia, which can prevent mosquitoes from transmitting dengue.

This discovery is part of The World Mosquito Program (WMP) Yogyakarta which is run by Prof. Adi Utarini. With this dengue virus control study, using Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that have been infected Wolbachia bacteria.

“I’m here to learn how to reduce the prevalence of dengue by controlling the mosquitoes, not eliminating them, but preventing them from transmitting the virus anymore. The trick is to introduce Wolbachia bacteria into mosquitoes, so that if they bite, they won’t spread,” said Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin on the Ministry of Health’s website. , Saturday (23/7/2022)

In the trial of the spread of Wolbachia mosquitoes that have been carried out in the City of Yogyakarta and Bantul Regency, the plan will continue to be expanded. Monitoring was carried out by nurses and researchers to see the effectiveness of Wolbachia bacteria against the spread of the dengue virus.

Meanwhile, the results showed that the locations distributed by Wolbachia were able to suppress dengue cases by up to 77 percent. This intervention, continued Prof. Uut, much more effective than the administration of dengue vaccine. In terms of financing is also claimed to be cheaper.

“Research WMP Yogyakarta, has produced evidence that in the area where we spread mosquitoes, the dengue rate has decreased by 77.1 percent and the hospitalization rate due to dengue has decreased by 86.1 percent. This intervention is more effective than the dengue vaccine,” said Prof. Uut.

Nevertheless, Prof. Uut said that the existence of Wolbachia’s technological innovation did not eliminate the existing dengue prevention and control methods in Indonesia.
