On September 21 and 22, 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Baiba Braže started her trip to New York to participate in the events of the Summit Week of the 79th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly (GA). and they would meet cooperation partners from all over the world.
B. Braže participated in the opening of the UN Future Conference and the adoption of the Future Agreement, as well as delivering a speech at the Interactive Future Conference on multilateral strengthening for peace and international security. The Future Agreement represents the joint efforts of the countries of the world to improve global governance and reform international institutions in line with today’s challenges of climate change, growing inequality and new technologies to ensure a sustainable and secure future for future generations.
“Digital and emerging technologies have great potential to drive progress towards a sustainable future and can transform the way we deal with environmental, economic and social challenges. However, misuse of these new tools can pose serious security risks. We must ensure an inclusive digital transformation that puts human rights at the heart. We need to strengthen our resilience against misinformation. Latvia has valuable experience in building information integrity and promoting media literacy, and we are ready to share this experience with the international community,” said Baiba Braže in her speech.
The Minister emphasized the need to work with a wide range of cooperation partners so that the implementation of the ideas of the Future Agreement would be meaningful. It is essential to empower and involve women and girls in decision-making, as well as ensure the involvement of young people. B. Braze fully supported the words of former Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos (Juan Manuel Santos) expressing the opinion that the next UN Secretary General should be a woman.
During the visit, B. Braze and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Andorra, Imma Tora Fausa (Imma Tor Faus) to sign the Convention for the Prevention of Double Taxation with respect to Taxes on Income and Capital, Tax Evasion and Tax Evasion. It is of great importance for the promotion of international cooperation in the field of business.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs also visited the Latvian School in New Jersey, where she thanked the Latvian community for maintaining the Latvian way of life and traditions and for caring for the Latvian language. “You are our best ambassadors,” he emphasized to B. Braže during the meeting.

On the weekend of September 21 and 22, the Minister of Foreign Affairs had bilateral meetings with the foreign ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, South Sudan, Egypt, Cuba, Namibia, Senegal, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
The Summit Week of the 79th session of the UNGA will take place in New York from September 21 to 30. Alongside discussions on current international events, this session will focus on strengthening international solidarity and rule-based order.
Participation in UN events will emphasize Russia’s responsibility for the international crimes committed in Ukraine, strengthening multilateralism and international order, and the need to reform global governance.
Latvia will be represented at the week’s high-level events by President Edgars Rinkēvičs, Minister of Foreign Affairs Baiba Braže and Minister of Health Hosams Abu Meri.
