After the incident at Jacques-Cartier college in Issou, in Yvelines, the Minister of Education Gabriel Attal decided to react. Following the reactions of students and parents after a teacher presented the 17th century painting to a 6th grade class Diane and Acteon showing five naked women, the minister announced to the press “a disciplinary procedure against the students who are responsible for this situation and who have also admitted the facts”.
Teachers at Issou college (Yvelines) stopped teaching on Monday, with teachers’ unions and elected officials denouncing the difficulties encountered by the teaching team. Gabriel Attal also indicated that positions would be put in place to “reinforce school life teams”, “a CPE position but also reinforcements for educational assistants and AESH (accompanying students in a situation of disability)”. In addition to these announcements, an academic “values of the Republic” team will be deployed at Jacques-Cartier College, added the minister.
“Accumulation of facts”
This incident is the “straw that broke the camel’s back” in a college where the educational team lacks resources, teachers and elected officials lamented Monday when interviewed by AFP. “The perceptible discomfort, the multiplication of incidents and the increase in cases of violence now characterize the daily life of our establishment”, details an email consulted by AFP, sent Friday by the educational team to the parents of students, which does not mention the incident regarding the artwork.
The general secretary of the Snes-FSU union thus deplored on Friday a “very degraded climate” at the Issou college and deplored the “lack of support (…) from the institution, academic management and rectorate”, despite “several alerts “. A diagnosis shared Monday by the mayor of Issou Lionel Giraud (DVG). “The right of withdrawal concerns the accumulation of facts including the one we are talking about but which is one fact among others,” he insisted.
