TNTV: You expressed the wish that teachers could have time for dialogue (following the assassination of a teacher in mainland France, Editor’s note), for exchanges with their students. Why did you make this choice and what should this moment be used for?
Ronny Teriipaia, Minister of Education:
“I think it is important to raise awareness among our students about the issue of security, the issue of understanding history when there are these types of events, and to promote tolerance, peace and the prevention of radicalization. And obviously encourage active citizenship. It is important. »

TNTV: Were the teaching staff requesting this day of discussion on Monday?
Ronny Teriipaia:
“I think they are all united since this event is very recent, so we haven’t had time to consult them but I think they will obviously support it. »

TNTV: The assassination of the teacher is described as Islamist terrorism. 1st grade students are very young. How to approach such acts with children?
Ronny Teriipaia: “I have confidence in the teaching staff because they are teachers, they are professionals. They will know how to adapt the content that must be distributed to students. I’m sure. »

TNTV: You are Minister of Education, but you are also a teacher. 18,000 km from this attack, we may have the impression that the danger is far away. Do you still understand that some local teachers may be worried about the situation?
Ronny Teriipaia: ” Obviously. Nowadays, with globalization and social media, we are not immune. It’s true that we are far away, but we are in any case observing certain violent behavior, particularly from people who come from outside. At present, we are not yet there with regard to these radicalization phenomena, fortunately. But the question is to protect ourselves from external impact, particularly in terms of violence, and I think it is a good thing that we can safeguard our values of solidarity and respect. »

TNTV: At fenua, even if this has nothing to do with the acts of violence in France, violence is still present in schools. Do you think that these behaviors are linked to the different content that young people can find on social networks?
Ronny Teriipaia: “That’s obvious. They are young people so it is true that they are strongly influenced by this type of communication. I think the role of parents is to ensure that children are not constantly in contact with this type of information. It’s important to remind them of their role. In any case, at the level of educational establishments, we are there to warn them in terms of content and distribution of the image. Everything is designed to ensure that we preserve but also inform and raise awareness among young people about this type of issue. »

TNTV: About two weeks ago, you were traveling to Bora Bora in an establishment where acts of violence had been reported. Concretely, what is being implemented, what will be put in place to try to stem this phenomenon?
Ronny Teriipaia: “What is important is to make the student feel good. This is the primary objective. And to make the student feel good in the establishment, it is important to create an ecosystem favorable to its development and success. How do we set this up? It is precisely to encourage projects that can arouse the enthusiasm of students. But for it to go well, it has to be in a context, a calm climate. And to fight against forms of violence in establishments, we must put in place an action plan with all partners in the educational community, it is important, so that we can provide prevention among our young people. It’s essential. »
